On Your First Day

The staff will be available to greet you and your child as you arrive in the classroom. If possible, arrive early so you are able to say good-bye to your child in relaxed manner.

The length of time it takes for your child to feel comfortable with the room, the children and the teachers in their room depends on your child’s personality, past experience and the length of time they are scheduled. The teachers will work with you to make the adjustment go smoothly. Despite positive preparations, it is often difficult to say good-bye. Even after your child has attended Glendale Heights and made a complete adjustment, there may be days when he/she objects to being left.

Once you have left, staff will comfort your child, reassure him/her that you will be back later, and then get them involved in the room’s activities. Rest assured your child will be attended to and not left to cry. If you’d like, wait outside the room out of sight until you feel comfortable leaving, or call the center later to ask how things are going.

Children sometimes have a delayed reaction to this new experience. Talk to them and us about any anxieties or insecurities he/she may be having and let us know if we can be of help in the process.

Preparing for the First Day

Please visit the classroom with your child prior to their first day in the classroom. Spend time in the room with your child while he/she gets acquainted with the teachers, children and new surroundings. This is especially important for your child if he/she have never been in a group care situation before.

New Parent: if your child’s teacher is working with the children, he/she may not be able to spend much time with you when you visit. You may want to schedule your visit to the classroom as well as setting up a conference with your child’s teacher prior to your child’s first day.

Established Parents: if you are not new to the center but your child is moving to a new classroom, be sure to let the teachers know if you would like to set up a conference.
